The prevailing lack of awareness among Nigerians and data subjects regarding the significance of data protection has led to careless handling of their personal information. Without proper orientation, people fail to comprehend the potential harm that could arise from the mishandling or unauthorized exposure of their personal data. Consequently, there is a pressing need for concerted efforts from data-oriented organizations, the Nigeria Data Protection Bureau (NDPB), and other relevant regulatory bodies to spearhead campaigns and training programs. These initiatives should focus on enlightening both data-oriented organizations and data subjects about the critical importance of safeguarding their data from malicious entities such as scammers and fraudsters.

Creating a culture of data responsibility involves comprehensive educational campaigns that underscore the potential risks associated with negligent data practices. These campaigns should emphasize the adverse effects of data breaches, identity theft, financial scams, and other cybercrimes, illustrating the direct impact on individuals’ lives. Additionally, workshops, seminars, and informational materials should be organized to guide individuals on how to secure their personal data, including appropriate privacy settings on social media, strong password practices, and recognizing phishing attempts. By empowering individuals with the knowledge and tools to protect their data, we can contribute to a safer digital ecosystem for all.
